Haha the poo bag in a tree is a good one! As a dog walker I can offer some mitigation in that some people are doing a circular walk & will come back for it, but of course sometimes the walk changes routes or we forget to pick it up on the way back (though then they should go back for it when they remember!) I remember making no litter posters and stuff in school, I wonder if they still do that 🤔

What beautiful seaweed and seashell picture, I love your photography Melanie. I’m a member of the litterati (love that name) & it’s mostly dog poo and wrappers as me and the pooch wander our lovely village. It never ceases to astound me what some people will throw out a car window as they’re driving through the countryside ☹️

Thank you, Rae! Your kind words always touch my heart.

It’s so heartening to know there are so many of us tackling this problem.

The thing that astounds me is the people who bag their dog poo and then leave it on the trail or hang it in a tree! If they can bag it, they can bin it! 🤷🏻‍♀️ People are weird.

As I said to another reader, maybe we need more anti-litter education in the schools.

My favorite kind of litter; seashells and seaweed 💚INDEED. It's a joy to find you here & even more happy to have this essay be my first read of your work, Melanie! I'm from India & the situation is bad as is in the cities, especially the metropolitan cities - in and around the capital, but it also reaches our beaches & mountains. Whenever we trek in the Himalayas, we make it a point to carry all types of waste back to the city so it can be sorted - alcohol bottles, candy wrappers, WIPES!

Yes, thank you for your response, Mohika! It’s always heartening to learn of others like yourself who care about the environment and work to make things better! The cities seem to be the worst for litter. All that I can hope for is that there are concerned citizens everywhere uniting to try and fight this problem. Sad that even in a place as beautiful as the Himalayas there are people who litter. I wonder if we need more education in the schools about the horrendous effects of littering.

Well Mel of Goodness. You must have had your jellyfish watching me this morning as I was doing your bidding at sunrise here on the beaches of the Gulf of Thailand. I collected up a bunch f plastic bottles and did what I wish everyone would do with them when they are finished (before disposing of them), I took off the caps and then crushed them down to about 10% of their original size and then put the caps back on. That simple act of reducing the bulk makes transport and recycling and disposal so much more efficient. Simple solutions that can really make a difference. As far as cig butts and the butts that smoke them, I think it is a impossible task to find a solution to their pollution as how can you make them understand our ideas of a better cleaner world with someone who is in essence murdering themselves. So sad but I think true. It is so fine people devote themselves (people such as Georgie and you ;O)) to try to clean up the mess others have made of our beautiful world. Fortunately because of folks such as you, many beautiful places on this earth still retain that beauty due to your vigilance and devotion. I like that notion as it continues to fill my well of goodness to the brim. peace and love

You make a good point, dear friend: If a “butt” doesn’t love themself, how can they love anything or anyone else really?

Bravo 👏🏻for your good work on the beautiful beaches of Thailand!

I also flatten the plastic bottles I find but I hadn’t thought of the benefits you mentioned; I only do it so I can carry more in my hands or bag. Your kind comments fill my well with peace and love. xoxo
